Community Shelter Upgrade for Rohingya Camps; IOM, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, 2018

As a result of the heavy monsoons of June 2018, there was significant structural damage to shelters in the Rohingya camps of Cox’s Bazar. In order to respond to the worsening shelter situation in the camps, IOM Bangladesh developed a training module aligning with the basic fundamentals of shelter upgradation, on the basis of which RedR India rolled out and facilitated 5 ToT courses, one on “Shelter Upgrade and DRR”, and four on “Community Shelter Upgrade” for IOM partner staff who were working directly with the camp population. These courses were conducted to enhance the technical and training skills of participants such that they are well-equipped to enable timely upgradation of the emergency shelters provided to the Rohingya population based on the key messages on Shelter Upgradation developed for the context. Apart from this, the training helped participants improve their training facilitation skills such that they could ensure delivery and transmission of key messages including enhancement of community buildings to secure them against natural hazards and risks, especially for the current and subsequent monsoons.

Shelter Construction Global Training Package Pilot; Save the Children UK, 2016

In order to achieve the desired quality of construction in all programs of Save the Children across diverse contexts and countries, a global standard on Construction Programming was identified as an essential need. Recognizing this need for promoting global benchmarks and Standards, SCUK developed a document on “Construction Policies, Benchmark Standards and Tools” (CPBT). In order to operationalize these standards, SCUK needed to build the capacities of their staff and partner. In this regard, RedR India was engaged to design a master training package consisting of 26 modules with content based on the different stages of construction, wherever standards are applicable. This module was then piloted in Nepal in the form of a 5-day long training program. Learnings, inputs and feedback from this pilot were incorporated in the training package to finalize it.

Shelter Training, Nepal Earthquake; IOM, 2016

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in 2015, over 600,000 houses needed to be constructed and 250,000 to be repaired. RedR India collaborated with IOM to design and deliver training on Build Back Safer targeting community focal points, masons, social mobilisers, government engineers and programme officers of IOM and partners. RedR conducted 18 training courses and reached 343 persons directly with the hands on skills and knowledge building training using the 10 Key Message for Building Back Safer. These persons thereafter operated from the Shelter Hubs to reach out to the affected families directly.

Shelter Training Cyclone Haiyan; Philippines, IOM, 2014

In the aftermath of the 2013 Typhoon in the Philippines, with an aim to recover and reconstruct damaged infrastructure, Shelter Recovery across the Yolanda affected area is occurring at an unremitting pace. Post Yolanda, communities are rapidly building back their shelters. However, the construction seems to be being undertaken rapidly, by and large, without addressing the pre-existing structural vulnerabilities. Within the rush to reconstruct it vitally important to deliver critical Disaster Risk Reduction messages around “building back safer” fast enough in an effective manner. In view of this RedR India worked together with the Cluster, Oxfam GB and IOM and designed a training course based on the agreed Shelter Cluster concept on build back safer effectively, and conducted/ facilitated four ToTs on Build Back Safer Shelter Training of Trainers followed by handholding in Barangays (communities and shelter artisans) for IOM and Oxfam GB across Guiuan, Tacloban, Ormoc and Roxas.

Shelter, DRR and Climate Change Training; Habitat for Humanity, 2009

In 2009, RedR India delivered two customized training programmes on community-based disaster management in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity (HFH). The idea of designing a special course on Shelter, Settlement and DRR emerged during these training programmes. This discussion led to an intense brainstorming amongst RedR members, which resulted in designing a pilot course on “Climate Change and CBDRR with special reference to Shelter and Settlement”. This course was conducted at Chennai during 22nd to 25th June 2010.
