Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction Training with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center; ADPC, Bihar, 2017-18

As part of the Disaster Risk Reduction Project with ADPC and Government of Bihar, funded by BMGF, RedR India conducted State-Level capacity building training on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Bihar. The pilot training was undertaken following the capacity building need assessment and development of modules on Disaster Risk Reduction identified for the Department of Health, Disaster Management and Agriculture. The main objective was to reduce the vulnerability of at-risk communities of Bihar State of India by strengthening the institutional leadership for disaster preparedness to respond to and recover from disasters. A total of 7 modules were developed for the project and they were piloted in a different district of Bihar to test their feasibility. Feedback was also collected from the participants during those training, based on which the modules were developed. A total of 6 technical courses were undertaken along with a  ToT, totalling the outreach for this training to 175 participants.

Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Methods (VRAM) for the University of Copenhagen, Karaikal, Puducherry, February 2018

RedR India, in collaboration with BEDROC (Building and Enabling Disaster Resilience of Coastal Communities), partnered with the University of Copenhagen to facilitate a course on VRAM, as part of the University’s Master’s program in Disaster Management. 9 students of the course visited India to attend a 5-day training program on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, conducted at Karaikal, Puducherry, post which, the team conducted Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment in 2 selected villages (Vettaikaraniruppu and Vilunthamavadi) of Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. The program aimed at providing theoretical clarity and building perspectives for the students on Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) and the essential aspects of Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM). It involved a mix of theory, demonstration and skill-based practice exercises on the field, along with interactions with government, NGO and community stakeholders.

HVCA Tools Training and Baseline Handholding Support; Concern Worldwide, India, 2011

Hazard, Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (HVCA) with baseline study is one of the significant steps in facilitating CBDRR process with communities. Applying participatory methods and tools makes it possible to raise awareness about existing reality as well as ownership of the CBDRR process amongst community members. RedR India in collaboration with Concern Worldwide conducted a process of capacity building and hand-holding process with Concern partners’ staff in Puri, Orissa. The process involved facilitation of two workshops and field-based hand holding to the participants to conduct HVCA using community participation tools. The process also involved consultation with key concerned members about facilitation of the process. The preparations for facilitating this process involved designing context specific module on HVCA baseline and PRA tools.

Multisector CBDRR Modules for PRIs; Unicef India, 2010

The training of Panchayati Raj Institutions and block level government official for mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) was a significant step towards sustainable DRR process integrated with development. This topic on understanding basics of DRR in the context of development and role of PRI dwells with the understanding of development for all, impact on disasters on the development of most vulnerable and role of PRIs in reducing risks of disasters. On this background, RedR India in collaboration with UNICEF in West Bengal designed sector-specific training modules for PRIs in 2010. These training packages included the following modules:

1. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Disaster Risk Reduction (3 days)
2. Shelter, Settlement and lifeline services for Building Resilient Communities. (3days)
3. Food Security, Nutrition and Livelihood in Disaster Risk Reduction (3 days)
4. Health in Disaster Risk Reduction (3 days)
5. Child protection and Education in Disaster Risk Reduction (3 days)

Capacity Building and Technical support for CBDRM Project; West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, WHH India, 2009

WHH partners initiated Village Knowledge Centers(VKC) at five sites in 4 states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. Partners completed the process of community needs assessment (CNA). RedR provided intensive hand-holding support for this CNA process. The next step in this pilot project was to enrich VKCs with easily accessible and need-based content with the aim of enhancing the use of VKCs. A workshop was planned to help partners to understand the significance and skills of content development. The workshop also dealt with the aspect of process documentation, to help partners to monitor the progress as well as enhancing the content development process. The workshop was designed and facilitated jointly with MSSRF.

Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Project; Jammu and Kashmir, AKDN India, 2008

In the backdrop of 2005 Kashmir earthquake, RedR India in collaboration with AKDN designed and conducted capacity building project on community-based disaster preparedness in 17 earthquake affected villages of Uri block in Baramullah district of J & K. This capacity building project was planned in three phases. The first phase of the project dealt with capacity building on understanding hazards, vulnerability and capacities of the community emphasizing the need for community organization for preparedness. The second phase of the project helped communities to gain knowledge and skills of search and rescue and first aid. The third phase of the project was about community-led camp management and training of trainers. All together 51 onsite training courses were conducted reaching out to almost 500 men, women and youth.

Community-Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP); Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, FOCUS Humanitarian, 2008- 09

RedR India in collaboration with Focus Humanitarian International India, designed and conducted series of training courses on CBDP with community leaders from 25 villages of the delta region of Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. These training courses were specially designed on search and rescue, first aid and community-led relief camp management with special reference to floods, cyclone and tsunami hazards.
